I enjoyed last years Star Party in the Lincolnshire Wolds. It was memorable to me because it was the first time I had seen Neptune and Uranus.

I liked it also because there were facilities for camping but local members could go home in early hours also.

It was also an excellent opportunity to view and compare equipment. Optical and Camping.

We should make an attempt this year, Perhaps Aug Bank Holiday.

Will make an announcement at next main meeting.

Suggestions for a venue will be most welcome before meeting.

one idea

A 'proper site' but may have to trade off Showers/ loo / a bar etc. for darkness

"Hello Dave McCracken,

Thank you for your email, yes our site is dark, although for stargazing, you may be better off coming mid week, or later in the year, as at weekends we are a lively site and we therefor can’t guarantee darkness. You mention the Wolds, please note we are not on the Wolds, we are on the banks of the River Ancholme, but as we are a level site, you do get a good view of the stars at night. If you want to come and see the site for yourself before booking, then that is not a problem.
I hope I have been of help.
Joan Thacker"

I have secured for this years event, for the society, permission to use the RAF Heritage Centre, (the former RAF) Binbrook ( ). The date as announced at last meeting is the August Bank holiday weekend 23rd to 26th however, if nobody intends to make use every night please say so up front. I don’t want to sit up there all weekend on my own. It is situated on the old airfield part of the station. From Binbrook village, turn left, if coming from Market Rasen direction, up the hill and past primary school to your right, follow sign posts ‘industrial estate’, near top of hill drive past the old RAF houses, past the former RAF Station Gatehouse and where the road turns into a track turn right through the large metal mesh gates to the far end of the road. This is the old airfield perimeter track. A big fence separates it from the hangers so if you find yourself among the old airmen's accommodation etc., you are on the wrong side of the fence. Hangers are now industrial / storage units. I will have to guess at numbers in my reply back to the site owner, Ray, however here are the site rules, remember this is not a regular camp site. Bring fresh water. His conditions of use are set out below. No formal fee has been agreed with Ray yet but this is a registered charity and I would suggest campers and just observing members make a suitable donation. Last year it was £10 per night.

1. Trip hazards exist away from the grass and hard standing area. Don’t wander about in the dark.
2. The toilet facilities are a single Portaloo but Ray may be able to 'borrow' use of a mains loo for us.
3. No smoking on site. Its classed as a place of work and there are inflammable materials stored there.
4. No dogs, unless very well behaved and subject to Ray’s discretion.
5. BBQ's are OK but no waste materials disposal so basically what you bring, you take away.
6. Owner, Ray, has to be on site and will open the gate accordingly.
7. Vehicles can be parked on site for security.
8. Anyone with a [serious] medical condition to declare it, he needs to know about it for emergency purposes.
9. First aid and fire fighting equipment is available but not necessarily 'in date”.
10. Public liability insurance is in force.
11. No wandering off into the hinterland
12. Respect the memorial sapling trees, benches and nameplates to fallen aircrew.

Given the weather forecast but mostly because of the lack of declared interest from members (just myself to camp all weekend and 3 visitors for maybe one of Sat or Sun) it is not worth proceeding with this year.

Ray, the site owner, was prepared to turn out to open up and lock up for us at all hours and he has been tidying the site in preparation so I feel particularly embarrassed at having to take this decision.
