TAWPIA The Astronomical Work Party In Action

Postby TheChairMan » Sat May 11, 2013 10:07 am

Historically TAWPIA used to be a regular section in Eyepiece (Lincolnshire's longest running astronomical based scientific periodical).

This forum gives an opportunity to revive TAWPIA, not that work has ever ceased at the LAS site.

This year activities have started as agreed at business meetings by committee consent.

Notably:

- Perimeter security has been improved. HERAS construction fencing has been put in place.

- Side door has been replaced, exterior trim and interior insulation/boarding to be finished.

- Heating system tweaked for optimum reactor performance.

The Main events are about to be started.

- Observatory Dome repairs.

- Observatory floor renovations. Before commencement some final basement clearance is required.

The site is normally opened by a key holder early Saturday Afternoon until about 1600hrs.

Is this every Saturday or only those days shown on the calendar?

Yes, the calender should be used for this type of activity. Therefore I will start annotating it in advance. I'll verify how to use it first.

Timings for Site access are not fixed but generally there is someone there at 1330 now

Yesterday, TAWPIA was rain affected and attended by 3 members.

Observatory:

The Observatory is now out of use for a while. Society telescopes are available for use out site lecture hall.

The Dome was jacked-up into position for first box ring exterior panel removal prior to internal strengthening activities as agreed at business meeting.

The lower part of the dome shutter was screwed in position so as not to flap in wind now it is 'parked' in a different orientation.

Lecture Hall:

Also sheets of plywood have been cut to size for the interior door of the lecture hall, these will be attached when gaps filled and insulation put in place.

Perhaps the times on the calendar should be corrected. They say 12 - 2:30 - on here it states its early afternoon or 13:30. I have somehow assumed the times on the calender, being the latest additions, were correct but I have just spent a fruitless half hour waiting in Lincoln having got there around 12. Can't do a later time today unfortunately.

Observatory

Today part of the Dome box ring exterior removed. It is now evident what work is required. Water ingress over the years has weakened glue and plywood has delaminated. Repairs will be in-line with proposal discussed at commitee meeting.

Other work.

Former lecture hall glass side doors sawn in half and disposed of locally together with old frame parts.

Komet, you are correct and we need to be more organised.

Yesterday first arrivals must have been just after you departed.

We do arrive earlier if there are larger jobs planned. For instance 0930 for the side door replacement.

Regular TAWPIA volunteers have each others telephone numbers to confirm site attendance on work party days. If you wish, you can be included, it can be sorted at next meeting.

Apologies for this.

No apology needed.

This forum would be a great place to post info like this but as it is moderated (and I fully understand why looking at the number of "hits" each post gets!!) there is always a delay before a post is made and it finally appearing.

Perhaps a mailing list system might be a better way rather than a web based forum. I have run quite a few over the years and as the list is totally private there is no issue of spamming. Any post go to all members of the list and replies also go to all members. Being email based it is almost instant. It's just a thought.

In the meantime who should I send my phone number to - no need to post the email address, a name will do if the contact details are in the Members area.

Cheers

We can exchange details at a forthcoming meeting.

I have no experience of setting up, using and maintaining emailing lists.

There could be alternatives (preferably zero cost) that the society can benefit from.

The society should consider this, in fact it has been talked about in the past.

Work starts today shortly after 1300hrs.

It was a constructive day yesterday.

Observatory:

Since last week some plywood sections were cut out and delivered Tuesday evening. Saturday was used to trim to suit and prepare for fixing in place next week.

Lecture Hall:

The unplasticized polyvinyl chloride ship-lap cladding on the lecture Hall side door was trimmed using a router. This is in preparation for fitting of last bits of external trim.

Other Activities:

Tea and biscuits.

Astronomical conversations (Photography, telescopes).
