Canon RAW files CR2

Postby DaveMcC » Sun Feb 22, 2015 10:18 am

I just got a second-hand Canon EOS 450D yesterday so I can try and get better focus with the magnified live view feature. Just a body and charger, so it came with no software. It was set already to RAW+JPEG. What software is needed to stack CR2 files anybody ?

I have a bunch of 'M3' files waiting to be processed this Thursday :D

I use Deep Sky Stacker mainly because it is free and it does an ok job but takes a long time to process. Also very annoying when it does not work after churning away for almost an hour; it does give an error message but flashes it so quickly on the screen that you need to be watching like a hawk. Komet will tell you it is useless. Maxim DL is capable of capturing and processing DSLR images, but I have not managed to get it to take files from my 1100D, which are also .CR2. If you have a later version of MDL you may be more successful.
I use Backyard EOS for image capture which I find easy to use and although not free it is reasonably priced.
You could also have a look at Nebulosity (captures and processes images) which was used by Andy Langford with his Canon and costs $80.
Good luck.

If your .CR2 files will not load into Maxim then install the Canon Utilities software (from the Canon website) and convert your files to TIFFS. They will load into Maxim which will calibrate, align and stack.
